ISLANDER WOMEN COMPLETE SEASON WITH LOSS TO TEXAS STATE

The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's tennis team saw its season end on Friday morning with a 4-1 loss to Texas State in the first round of the Southland Conference Tournament. The conference championships are being held at the HEB Tennis Center throughout the weekend.

"I'm nothing but proud; proud of the work they did and the way they stuck together," said Director of Tennis Steve Moore. The injuries and the close matches could have turned the season the other way but they refused to take that path.

"They took the path of courage and stay with it and it got them the highest seed in the program's history."

The Islanders finish the season with a 10-11 record and completed one of the most successful seasons in school history. They earned the No. 6 seed in the tournament, their highest ever since joining the Southland Conference with one of the youngest squads in the league.

The Islanders and Bobcats played a close doubles portion of the match, splitting the first two before Texas State took the point by winning No. 3 doubles. Doris Kuselj and Bianca Discordia won 8-4 at No. 2 doubles to even the doubles at 1-1 after Mirna Cicak and Megan Harless lost by an identical 8-4 score at No. 1. Nadia Filmalter and LeAnne Mascall fell 8-3 to give Texas State the early advantage.

In singles, Kuselj even the match at 1-1 when she took a dominating 6-4, 6-0 victory over Melissa Hadad at the No. 2 position. The Bobcats regained the advantage when they won back-to-back at No. 5 over Adrianne Kovacs and at No. 6 over Filmalter. Texas State clinched the match when Mascall lost 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 4 spot.

Discordia was trailing by a 1-0 score in the third set after splitting the first two at No. 3 singles. Cicak was tied at 3-3 in the second set at No. 1 singles after falling by a 7-6 (7-4) score in the first set.

"Absolutely give credit to Texas State today, they played a great match because we played a great match," said Moore. "They are very well coached and they play the best doubles in the conference.

"Sometimes you just have to tip your hat to other team and the other coach, they won a battle today."

With just one senior on the team, the Islanders will bring back every singles player and should be in contention next season for a Southland Conference title.

"We are proud of our group, we are proud of what we have, this group really maxed out this year and we have every single starter returning," said Moore. "Three freshmen and a sophomore this season and the highest seed in school history, I salute our team.

"I can't tell you how bright the future looks for this team with their character and the way they stay together."
