ISLANDER WOMEN'S TENNIS TAKES DOWN UTSA IN SOUTHLAND MATCH

The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's tennis team got back on the winning track Saturday afternoon with a 5-2 win over Southland rival UTSA. The match was never in doubt as the Islanders clinched by a 4-0 margin before finishing out all matches in accordance with Southland Conference rules.

TAMUCC is now 7-7 on the season with a 3-4 record in Southland Conference matches. The Roadrunners fall to 3-10 on the year and 0-6 in Southland play.

"We needed this win and we nailed it," said Director of Tennis Steve Moore. "These girls competed awesome today.

"We knew we needed to win this match to stay in the conference hunt."

The Islanders ran through the doubles portion of the match, winning at all three positions to take and early 1-0 lead. At the No. 1 spot, Mirna Cicak and Megan Harless teamed up for the first time in three matches as they won an 8-6 final over Caroline Dedering and Micaela Silva. Cicak, the Islanders No. 1 singles player, had missed the past two matches due to injury while TAMUCC's No. 2 player, Doris Kuselj, had missed the last conference match as well.

"Great courage today from Mirna and Doris, they've been battling injuries," said Moore. "The training staff has worked extremely hard with those girls to get them healthy.

"They were 50-50 to play today and they both played and won."

At No. 2 singles, Kuselj and Bianca Discordia won a tight 9-7 battle against Kavya Menon and Katie Ottenbreit to clinch the doubles point for TAMUCC. The No. 3 match saw LeAnne Mascall and Nadia Filmalter winning an 8-5 decision against Sarah Adams and Mariel Maffezzolli.

In singles action, Cicak won 6-3, 6-2 over Silva at the No. 1 position. Kuselj also won her singles match at No. 2, taking a 6-2, 7-5 final over Dedering. Both Cicak and Kuselj are undefeated in Southland Conference singles matches.

At the No. 4 spot, Discordia took down Adams by a 6-2, 6-3 final and Mascall won 6-4, 6-3 over Maffezzolli at the No. 5 position. The only two losses for the team came when Adrienne Kovacs lost a 6-3, 6-4 match to Menon at No. 3 singles and Filmalter fell by a 7-5, 2-6, 10-7 score to Ottenbreit.

"This team is so young they just needed to get over the hump," said Moore. "They really, really played big today."

The Islanders have one of the youngest lineups in the country, boasting three freshmen and a sophomore in their top six players.

Next up for TAMUCC is a Tuesday evening match against Maryland-Baltimore County as part of a men's and women's doubleheader. Both teams will play at the Corpus Christi Country Club starting at 6 PM.
