The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's tennis team picked up a hard-fought 4-3 victory against UTEP on Thursday afternoon on the backs of their freshmen. In a match that lasted nearly six hours, the Islanders' LeAnne Mascall picked up a three-set win in No. 6 singles to clinch the match for her team.
The Islanders improve to 2-1 on the season with a top six that features three freshmen and a sophomore. UTEP moves to 0-4 on the season. TAMUCC picked up a rare opponent victory against the Miners in El Paso as UTEP was 9-1 at home last season.
"I was very proud and pleased with our effort today," said Director of Tennis Steve Moore. "We really battled hard and showed a lot of resiliency.
"This is a great win for our program."
In doubles action, TAMUCC would take a 2-1 victory for the first point of the match. Mirna Cicak and Megan Harless won at No. 1 doubles by an 8-4 score, Mascall and Bianca Discordia lost an 8-5 match at the No. 2 spot and Doris Kuselj and Nadia Filmalter won the deciding match, winning 8-5 at the No. 3 position.
In singles action, UTEP raced out to a 2-1 lead by winning at the No. 4 and 5 spots. Kuselj tied the match up at 2-2 by winning 7-6, 6-2 at the No. 2 spot. The Islanders fell behind 3-2 after losing at No. 3 singles but were brought back to level by Cicak at the No. 1 spot, winning by a 7-6, 7-6 final and evening the match once again.
In the deciding match, Mascall fought back from an early deficit to claim a 3-6, 7-6, 6-4 victory at No. 6 singles. Down a set and trailing 4-1 in the second, Mascall came all the way back, notching a 7-6 tiebreak win before taking the final set by a 6-4 margin. She was one of two freshmen that picked up huge singles wins for the Islanders on the day.
"UTEP is a very good team that is very well coached and it doesn't get much closer than this," said Moore. "There were a lot of moments in this match where it could have gone the other way but we kept fighting back.
"That's pretty good work from our freshmen."
The Islanders now turn their attention to Illinois State on Friday at 9 AM and then Arkansas State at 12 PM. TAMUCC will play the two teams in El Paso as part of a three-match weekend as the other two are also scheduled to play UTEP.
