Lafayette, La. - The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's tennis team has been impressive this weekend as they take part in the Louisiana-Lafayette Invitational.
Freshman Doris Kuselj has led the way for the Islanders as she has made it all the way to the finals of the A draw in the tournament. Kuselj has won three matches to get to the finals, which will be played on Sunday morning on the campus of ULL.
In her first match on Friday, Kuselj beat Lisa Mainz of Central Arkansas by a 6-0, 6-1 final. In her second match, she took on and defeated Carla Nava of North Texas by a 6-1, 6-4 score. In her semifinal match on Saturday, Kuselj downed Briggitt Marcovich of ULL with a 7-6 (2), 6-2 victory. Kuselj will play Julie Mazinova in the finals on Sunday morning at 9 AM.
Mirna Cicak won her first match on Friday, taking down Paula Dinuta of North Texas by a final of 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. In her second match of the day, Cicak dropped a 6-1, 3-6, 6-0 decision to Julie Mazinova of ULL.
In the B flight, Leanna Mascall lost 6-0, 6-2 to Milou Israel of ULL and Bianca Discordia lost 6-3, 6-3 to Natalie Araya of Middle Tennessee. Discordia bounced back later in the day to advance to the semifinals of the consolation round. She won that match 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 over Bianca Schulz of Northwestern State before losing in the championship round of the consolation bracket by a 4-6, 6-4, 10-8 final to Nina Schmied of Southeastern Louisiana.
In flight C, Megan Harless lost a 7-5, 6-4 match to Tara Vasovic of ULL.
In doubles action, Discordia and Kuselj beat Petra Keilova and Mainz of UCA by an 8-5 final. In round two, Discordia and Kuselj lost 8-3 to Marcovich and Mazinova of ULL. Cicak and Harless lost 8-4 to Dinuta and Amy Joubert of North Texas.
