ISLANDER WOMEN DOMINATE ON FINAL DAY OF SEASON
Shreveport, La. The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's tennis team ended their regular season on a high note Tuesday afternoon as they downed Centenary College by identical 5-0 scores in their match doubleheader.
The Islanders finish the regular season at 11-11 overall and will now look forward to the Southland Conference tournament starting on Friday at 12:00 PM. The Islanders will be the No. 7 seed and will take on No. 2 seed Lamar, who they narrowly lost to on Sunday by a 4-3 final. It is the first time in the program's history that the Islander women have qualified for the SLC tournament.
"Obviously this was our most successful team in school history," said Associate Head Coach Jason Holland. "We ended the season with a .500 record and quality Division I wins, something that has never been done before."
The Islanders dominated from the opening serve, winning all 10 matches played on the day and only losing a total of two games in the matches.
In the first match, the No. 3 singles between Pernelle Soulie and Stephanie Canady ended in a 6-0, 6-0 win for Soulie. Megan Harless took a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Arielle Schulman in No. 4 singles. Nadia Filmalter too a 6-0, 6-0 decision over Polly Henderson at No. 5 singles. In No. 1 singles, Mirna Cicak had little trouble, winning 6-0, 6-1 over Courtney Myers. The No. 2 singles match was defaulted and gave Nina Ciric the win after Centenary did not have anyone to fill the spot.
In the second match of the day, Ciric and Cicak switched positions, with Ciric winning 6-1, 6-0 over Myers. Cicak took a 6-0, 6-0 win over Kate Buchanon in No. 2 singles. Harless defeated Canady 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 3 position. Filmalter got her second victory of the day over Schulman with another 6-0, 6-0 final at the No. 4 position. The final match of the day had Fabiana Mersan winning a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Henderson to complete the second 5-0 victory of the day.
"We used today as kind of a platform to work on things for Friday," said Holland. "We have our eyes set on that rematch with Lamar after coming so close this past weekend.
"Out of all the possibilities, I love this matchup, it is exactly who we would have wanted to play after being so close this past weekend."
The Islanders will now turn their full attention to the SLC Tournament, where they will have a change to avenge their last loss of the season, a 4-3 decision to Lamar on Sunday, April 19. The Islanders took the match down to the wire before losing the deciding point at No.1 doubles to give the Cardinals the doubles point and the win. The match was played in Beaumont on the Cardinals home court whereas this match will take place in Corpus Christi on one of the Islanders home courts.
"We are completely focused on our matchup with Lamar this Friday," said Holland. "They will be in our home town this Friday and have to deal with our fans on our home court."
The match will begin at 12:00 PM and will be held at the HEB Tennis Center on Shely Street. Ticket prices are $10 per day of $15 for a tournament pass, which allows admittance into all three days of the event. All fans are encouraged to come out and support the Islanders as they make their first appearance in the SLC Tournament.
"This is a great opportunity for our seniors as it is their first time playing in the post-season in their careers," said Holland. "I think we will see them fight the hardest they have ever fought.
"We need the fans to come out to recognize them for all that they have accomplished and all their hard work they have put in."
