The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's tennis team lost a heart-breaker of a match on Sunday afternoon, falling 4-3 in a Southland Conference match against Sam Houston State at the Corpus Christi Country Club in their final home match of the season.
The Islanders fall to 7-8 on the season while evening their record to 3-3 in SLC matches. The Bearkats improve to 9-6 overall and 4-3 in SLC competition.
TAMUCC started out the day by winning the doubles point for an early 1-0 lead. The Islanders lost No. 1 singles by an 8-1 score as Mirna Cicak and Nadia Filmalter dropped their decision to Irina Sotnikova and Peta Taylor. The Islanders were able to fight their way back however, winning No. 2 doubles as Nina Ciric and Megan Harless fought off Paty Manzur and Giorgia Pozzan with an 8-5 win. Erika Iriarte and Alexandra Dyckman finished off the doubles win with an 8-6 final over Eleonora Kuruc and Stasa Vujosevic in No. 3 doubles.
"In the doubles we really competed well and played hard," said Associate Head Coach Jason Holland. "We learned a lot about what we have to work on today."
The Islanders had a rough singles portion of the match however, as they lost No. 1, No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 singles to fall by a 4-3 final to the match on the day. In No. 1 singles, Cicak fell by a 7-5, 7-5 score to Sotnikova of Sam Houston State. No. 2 singles saw Iriarte drop a 6-1, 6-1 match to Pozzan of the Bearkats. No. 3 singles had Ciric losing to Taylor 6-2, 6-4. The deciding match saw Dyckman drop a three-set heartbreaker to Manzur, as Iriarte won the first set but lost the final two to finish the match at 5-7, 6-4, 6-3. No. 5 singles had Pernelle Soulie defeating Kuruc 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 in three sets. No. 6 singles saw Fabiana Mersan down Lilit Martirosyan 6-3, 6-1.
"Our goal right now is the conference tournament," said Holland. "That is where we are going to be judged in the conference and what we have to get ready for."
The Islanders now move on to another SLC opponent, as they play at UT Arlington on Wednesday, April 8. The match will be held in Arlington and is set for a 2:00 PM start. TAMUCC will look to get back on track in the conference race and gain ground towards the SLC Tournament.
"We competed really hard, they are a young group and we learned what we have to work on," said Holland. "It is a tough loss but we will have three good weeks of practice as we get them ready for the SLC Tournament.
