ISLANDERS FALL TO TULANE IN FINAL MATCH OF ISLANDER INVITATIONAL

The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's tennis team fell by a 4-1 final to the Tulane Green Wave Saturday morning at the Corpus Christi Country Club in the final match of the 1st Annual Islander Team Invite. The Islanders finish 1-2 in the tournament while the Green Wave finishes undefeated at 3-0.

"We wanted to bring a high level women's college tournament to Corpus Christi." said Director of Tennis Steve Moore. "I feel this tournament was a great success mainly because of the gracious way the community supported it."

"The people who housed the teams and the sponsors really made this happen for us and we are looking forward to growing the tournament in years to come."

The Islanders go to 4-5 overall on the season while the Green Wave improved to 7-7 on the year.

"I felt our girls really competed well out there today." said Moore. "Tulane was the better team today but the girls kept fighting."

On a cold and windy day, the Islanders faced off against a team that was 2-0 in the tournament coming into the match, with Tulane having beat UTEP and Texas-Pan American the previous day. In No. 1 singles, it was freshman against freshman as Mirna Cicak took on Anna Bartenstein of Tulane. Bartenstein would go on to take the match against Cicak 6-3, 6-4. No.2 singles saw Nadia Filmalter fall to Mariam Kurdadze by a 6-0, 6-0 final. In No. 3 singles, Lindsay Dvorak beat Nina Ciric by a 6-4, 6-3 tally to put the Green Wave up 3-0.

The Islanders would hold off the end of the match when Alexandra Dyckman defeated Caroline Gerber in a tough battle, winning 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 to get the Islanders to within 3-1. No. 6 singles, however, would decide the match, as Marcela Fonseca of Tulane finished with a 6-4, 7-5 win. No. 4 singles had Erika Iriarte facing Elizabeth Hamlin of Tulane, with Iriarte winning the first set and trailing in the second. The score finished with Iriarte up 7-6, 1-4 unfinished.

"These girls are incredibly hard working." said Moore. "I know they will keep improving and be better at the end of each month."

"That is really exciting"
