The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's tennis team had an up-and-down day as they went 1-1 in the first day of the 1st Annual Islander Invitational, beating Texas-Pan American 5-1 in the morning and falling to UTEP 4-1 in the afternoon. The Islanders hosted matches at the Corpus Christi Athletic Club and the Corpus Christi Country Club.
The Islanders go to 4-4 on the year while UTPA falls to 1-9 after their matches on the day while UTEP went 1-1 to go 9-2 on the season. Tulane played UTPA and UTEP during the day, winning both matches to improve to 6-6 on the season.
In the early match, the Islanders played the UTPA Broncs at 9 AM at the Corpus Christi Athletic Club. TAMUCC dominated the match, winning by a 5-1 score as they beat the Broncs in consecutive matches, having last played in Edinburg against UTPA on the 17th of February.
"We have played UTPA both in Edinburg and in Corpus Christi now." said Director of Tennis Steve Moore. "We felt like our energy and intensity in the UTPA were excellent from the beginning."
In the No. 1 singles, Mirna Cicak defeated Stephanie Willerding by a 6-3, 6-2 final. No. 2 singles saw Luisa Cantu of UTPA beat Madia Filmalter by a 6-4, 6-4 score. The Islanders got back on track in No. 3 singles, with Nina Ciric breezing through with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Megan Bedeau. Erika Iriarte quickly finished her match with a 6-1, 6-2 finish over Andrea Salvetova to win No. 4 singles. Alexandra Dyckman took the No. 5 singles match by a 6-1, 6-2 margin over Malin Andersen. The final match of the morning saw Pernelle Soulie beat Sarah Burton of UTPA by a 6-3, 6-2 final.
The teams elected not to play the doubles round as the Islanders had already clinched the win by virtue of the 5-1 score in the best-of-seven competition.
"We were very focused in the early morning match." said Moore. "This tournament means a lot to these girls and they wanted to come out and perform well."
In the 4 PM match, the Islanders had a harder time against the UTEP Miners. UTEP took a 4-1 final in the last match of the day.
"You gotta give credit to UTEP." said Moore. "They are a tremendously upgraded team from last year and played extremely well today."
No. 1 singles saw Weronika Bloczynska defeat Ciric in a hard-fought, three-set match by a 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 final. The Miners Carolina DeLuca took on Filmalter, winning a 6-3, 6-1 match in No. 2 singles to put UTEP up 2-0 in the overall match. No. 3 singles saw Marina DeLuca beat Ciric with a 6-4, 7-6 decision to take a commanding 3-0 lead. Iriarte staved off the end of the match in No. 4 singles by taking a closely contested 7-6, 7-5 match over Megan Pritchard to make it 3-1 UTEP. No. 6 singles clinched the match for the Miners, as Vicky Michaud defeated Soulie by a 6-4, 7-6 final. No. 5 singles was in-progress at 6-3, 4-6, 2-3 when the match was stopped due to the victory by UTEP.
"Our girls fought hard like they do in every match." said Moore. "They are out there learning and are on the right track to improving."
The Islanders will start up Saturday morning at the Corpus Christi Country Club with a 9 AM match time. TAMUCC will be taking on Tulane. If the Islanders win the match, both teams will sit at 2-1 and they will hold the tie-breaker over the Green Wave due to head-to-head. The Islanders will look to rebound and take the tournament as all area fans are encouraged to come out to see the Islanders play.
"Our girls fought hard." said Director of Tennis Steve Moore. "We had a great crowd and were very appreciative of the fan support today."
