ISLANDERS START FAST BUT FADE TO SMU
Dalls - The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's tennis team started fast but were unable to hold their early advantage in falling to SMU 4-0 on Monday afternoon.
The Islanders fall to 1-2 on the season while SMU improves to 5-0 on the year.
In a match that started with singles first, the Islander women got off to a great start against the Mustangs of SMU.
"We got off to an incredibly good start today." said Director of Tennis Steve Moore. "We believed early on we had a very good shot to win the match."
In #1 singles, Mirna Cicak took a 4-1 lead over Natalia Bubien in the first set before SMU rallied to take the match in straight sets at 7-5, 6-4.
In #2 singles, Nadia Filmalter was actually at set point in the first frame before falling to Pavi Francis by an identical match score as set one, 7-5, 6-4.
In #3 singles, Nina Ciric won the first set over Sophie Quest before dropping the final two sets and the match 5-7, 6-2, 6-3.
In #6 singles, Fabiana Mersan lost in straight sets to Kseniia Tokarieva, 6-1, 6-1 to clinch the match for SMU and giving them the 4-0 win.
"They say you are either winning or learning." said Moore. "Today we ended up learning a lot about ourselves."
#4 and #5 singles were just starting the third sets when the match was called.
Both matches saw Islander players win the first sets before SMU won the second to force a final set.
Erika Iriarte played Kristen Reid to 2-6, 7-5, 1-0 before ending the match in #4 singles.
#5 singles saw Alexandra Dyckman play Monica Neveklovska to a 4-6, 7-6 (4) match before being called.
"We had a good shot to beat a ranked team today." said Moore. "We got a little tight late in the match but I believe we will be in a position to win this type of match next time."
The Islanders now travel to Lafayette, La. tomorrow to take on Louisiana-Lafayette in another non-conference match up. The Islanders and Cajuns will face off at 3 PM at Cajun Courts. The Islanders follow that match up with another against Louisiana-Monroe on Wednesday afternoon.
"We have two very good opportunities these next two days to get wins." said Moore. "I have to say I am very proud of the way these girls are competing and coming together as a team."
