Texas A&M-Corpus Christi freshman Mirna Cicak was named the Southland Conference's women's tennis player of the week, the first awarded of the season.
Cicak earned the honor by defeating Julie Chao of Rice, the #23 ranked player in the Southwest Divison of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. Playing in the first match of her collegiate career, Cicak faced off against the heralded Chao and beat her in straight sets, 7-5, 7-6.
"I really salute Mirna for what showing so much poise and maturity in her first collegiate match." said Head Coach Steve Moore. "We are all very proud of her and this honor she received."
The victory over Chao marked the highest-ranked player ever beaten by an Islander in the history of the program.
Cicak and the rest of the Islanders' team will be back in action against Central Arkansas on Feb. 1 in Dallas.
