ISLANDER WOMEN GAIN EXPERIENCE AT SFA TOURNAMENT
NACOGDOCHES The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's tennis program gained some valuable experience this past Friday and Saturday as they took part in the Stephen F. Austin Fall Invite.
With several injuries depleting the team, the Islanders were only able to bring three athletes to the tournament.
With the format of the tournament, Erica Iriarte was pitted against the flight 1 bracket, made up of all the best players in the tourney field.
Alexandra Valarezo was in the flight 2 draw and Alexandra Dyckman was pitted against the flight 3 draw.
Despite the toughness of the competition and the unfamiliarity of the competition, the Islander athletes were able to play at a high level and gain experience while also picking up some wins.
Iriarte, Valarezo and Dyckman all won their first round matches against some very good competition. The three participants were not able to advance any further however, with all three dropping second round and consolation round matches.
Iriarte in particular was impressive, while playing in her sixth match in two days, she took one of the best singles players at Lamar to the brink, losing by scores of 7-6, 7-6 while fighting through fatigue.
The team of Iriarte and Dyckman fell in their only two matches as a doubles team.
"The tournament was a tough format for them." said assistant coach Jason Holland "They were playing at a high level where the competition was some of the hardest they have faced."
