Soccer Shuts Out Texas Southern, 3-0
HOUSTON – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's soccer team earned its first win of the 2014 season with a 3-0 victory over Texas Southern on Sunday. Freshmen Bri Lugo and Nanna Poulsen and senior Aulona Velaj each scored their first goal in an Islanders uniform in the win.
Megan Delaney picked up her second shutout of the weekend for the Islanders, who completed their opening weekend 1-0-1. Delaney racked up three saves during Sunday's victory.
"It was a very slow first half with way too many turnovers and unforced mistakes," head coach Shanna Caldwell said. "We weren't connecting and we were making the game hard on ourselves. The second half, we were a little more focused and started to find feet and combine. Nanna made a great tackle and was able to convert it into a goal. That really helped lift us as a team with a renewed energy."
"I'm very happy to come away from today's game with a win," she added. "After a tough double overtime Friday and the scorching heat today, the weekend's results are fantastic. Our focus now is on Texas State next Friday."
Lugo got the Islanders on the board with her first career tally in the third minute. After Zoe Cole played a ball forward on the left side, it was mishandled by the Tigers keeper, and Lugo collected the loose ball and sent it inside the far post for a 1-0 lead.
The score remained that way through the halftime break, until Poulsen cracked the scoreboard for the Islanders in the 69th. The Ribe, Denmark, native won possession off a tackle near midfield and broke toward the goal. As the keeper charged forward to try to neutralize the threat, Poulsen chipped the ball over her and sent it into the back of the net to push the advantage to 2-0.
Velaj then added the final blow, finishing off the scoring with her first career goal in the 81st. Fellow senior Alyssa Miller fed a ball from the left side across to her classmate, and Velaj tucked it inside the near post just under the diving keeper to make it a 3-0 score in favor of the Islanders.
A&M-Corpus Christi will return to action next weekend, when it travels to San Marcos, Texas, for a matchup against Texas State on Friday. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at the Bobcat Soccer Complex.
