CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's soccer team wrapped its preseason exhibition season on Sunday, falling 1-0 to St. Mary's at the Dugan Soccer & Track Stadium. The Islanders controlled possession most of the contest even though they were limited to 12 field players for the majority of the event.
"I thought we did well keeping possession in the beginning of the game and kept our shape well," head coach Shanna Caldwell said. "I was disappointed in our inability to finish our chance early in the game, but like that we kept looking to attack.
"It was a good mental test today being so short in available players and having several playing in new positions," she added. "Right now we turn around and keep our focus on getting players back healthy on the field and preparing for Houston."
The Rattlers scored the lone goal of the game approximately 20 minutes in. Kristal Williams possessed the ball on the left side, and the Islanders defense closed on the ball. Her attempt was deflected, and caromed into the box to Heather Dawson, who put it into the back of the net. That was all the offense St. Mary's was able to muster in the opening 45 minutes, taking a 1-0 lead into the locker room.
The teams then played a 20-minute session and a 15-minute session, this time with the Islanders having the wind at their backs. The home squad held an edge in play during the first of the two sessions, but were unable to get on the scoreboard. In the final session, A&M-Corpus Christi turned up the pressure, and had several grade-A opportunities – the best of which saw Bri Lugo's shot carom off a defender and then off the crossbar.
The Islanders will kick off the 2014 season on Friday, Aug. 22, when they take to the road to face off with the University of Houston at 7 p.m. The team's first three games will be on the road before the home opener on Friday, Sept. 5, against the University of Texas.
