Top Moment #7: Miller's Golden Goal Leads Islanders to first SLC Win
The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi women's soccer team faced a tough challenge going into the matchup against McNeese State on Oct. 4 at the Dr. Jack Dugan Family Soccer and Track Stadium. Following two losses on the road, the Islanders were looking to turn their 0-4-0 conference play record around and gain the momentum they needed for the rest of the season.
The first half saw the majority of the action in the middle of the field, with the two teams battling for possession. The Islanders were limited to just two shots, but had a golden opportunity in the 40th minute. A well-played ball by Meghan Cordero was flicked on by Rachel Keeley and found its way to Yvette Franco. The freshman took a touch and got a shot off, but McNeese keeper Maggie Marks smothered it to keep the home squad off the scoreboard.
In the second half, the Islanders ratcheted up the pressure, peppering the goal with six shots in the first 14 minutes of action. But opportunities by Audrey Kuhl and Franco were blocked keeping it scoreless to go into overtime.
It was Islanders forward Alyssa Miller who made, what would come to be known as, the 'Golden Goal' that sent the Islanders into a frenzy. Franco played a nice ball down the left side to a streaking Miller. The junior dribbled into the 18-yard box, cut back to her right, then sent a ball past Marks and into the right corner of the goal to give the Islanders the 1-0 win at 94:46 on the clock. As soon as the goal was scored Miller dropped to ground from exhaustion and the Islanders rushed the field to celebrate Miller and her incredible efforts to lead her team to victory.
Miller was named GoIslanders.com student-athlete of the week for leading the Islanders to their first Southland Conference victory and the first home victory in program history. The Thornton, Colo., native finished the season as the second-leading scorer on the team.
