CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's soccer team will play seven regular-season home games, highlighted by the home opener against Texas, as part of its 2014 schedule. The Islanders will play a total of 17 contests in the regular season, in addition to hosting a pair of exhibitions at the Dugan Family Soccer & Track Stadium in the preseason.
"I'm excited with the schedule we've put together for this fall," head coach Shanna Caldwell said. "I think our non-conference opponents will certainly test us and help us be prepared for the start of conference play.
"Also," she added, "the buzz around our home opener under the lights with Texas on Sept. 5 has been awesome. I'm really looking forward to seeing our entire Corpus Christi community out there cheering and supporting us the way they did all of last season. We hope to continue to make our fans proud of our work both on the field and in the classroom."
With the addition of lights to Dugan Stadium, A&M-Corpus Christi will play five Friday night matches at home. Among these are marquee matchups such as Texas, UTSA and conference rivals Central Arkansas, Sam Houston State and Abilene Christian.
The first opportunity for fans to see the Islanders in Corpus Christi will be on Thursday, Aug. 14, as the team will play an exhibition against Cisco Junior College. The squad will also host an exhibition against St. Mary's, on Sunday, Aug. 17. A&M-Corpus Christi then opens its regular season at Houston on Friday, Aug. 22, before following that with road contests against Texas Southern (Aug. 24) and Texas State (Aug. 29).
The home opener will feature the Islanders against the Longhorns under the lights on Friday, Sept. 5, at 7 p.m. It will mark the second consecutive season that A&M-Corpus Christi has played host to a top-flight foe in its opener, as the squad took on Houston in the first soccer game at Dugan Stadium in front of a crowd of 1,187.
After a Sunday afternoon game at Rice (Sept. 7), the Islanders will return home to take on UTSA on Friday, Sept. 12. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi earned the first win in program history over the Roadrunners last year in San Antonio.
Conference play opens with four of the first five league games being played away from the Coastal Bend. Trips to Southeastern Louisiana (Sept. 19) and Nicholls (Sept. 21) start the league slate, before the Islanders' home conference opener against UCA on Friday, Sept. 26, at 7 p.m. A&M-Corpus Christi then returns to the road for matchups with McNeese State (Oct. 3) and Incarnate Word (Oct. 10).
The Islanders then play four consecutive games at home, beginning with a Sunday afternoon affair against Lamar, on Oct. 12 at 1 p.m. Friday night affairs against ACU (Oct. 17) and SHSU (Oct. 24) at Dugan Stadium follow, with a Sunday afternoon matchup against Houston Baptist on Oct. 26 scheduled as the home finale. The Islanders will honor their three seniors – Alyssa Miller, Sara Chandlee and Aulona Velaj prior to that game as part of Senior Day festivities.
A&M-Corpus Christi then wraps the regular season with a trip to the Piney Woods, as matchups with Stephen F. Austin (Oct. 31) and Northwestern State (Nov. 2) conclude the year. The 2014 Southland Soccer Tournament is slated for Nov. 6-9 at the Lamar Soccer Complex in Beaumont, Texas. The top six teams in the conference will earn berths into the postseason.
