SHSU Topples Islanders 2-0 Friday Night
HUNTSVILLE, Texas – Sam Houston State's goal in the seventh minute proved to be enough, as the Bearkats toppled the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's soccer team 2-0 on Friday night. The Bearkats improved to 7-8-1 overall and 5-4-0 in league play, while the Islanders are now 2-13-0 and 1-8-0 in their first season of college soccer.
"I thought we played well tonight overall," head coach Shanna Caldwell said. "Early on we had trouble making the adjustment to their attack and they capitalized with a first half goal. We had some great performances tonight and the work rate was strong. We still just need to be a little more polished with the final pass in the attacking third. The team is still in good spirits and looking forward to Sunday's game."
Audrey Baldwin made six saves in a losing effort for the Islanders, while Kylie Hambleton recorded the shutout for SHSU. The Bearkats did a strong job neutralizing the Islanders attack, limiting A&M-Corpus Christi to just seven shots in the game.
The Bearkats struck early on with a goal in the seventh minute off the foot of senior Tricia Mallory. Mallory made a brilliant play off a feed from Ashley Fluty, taking a half-volley from just outside the box and sending it into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead at the 6:45 mark. From there, the Islanders settled in and entered the locker room with the scoreboard still reading 1-0.
A&M-Corpus Christi maintained its pressure, but was unable to garner the equalizer early in the half. Then, with 14 minutes remaining, SHSU was able to extend its lead with a Mariah Titus goal that made it 2-0 at the 73:31 mark. Titus finished off a cross from eight yards out, as Shelby McDaniel assisted on Titus' team-leading seventh goal of the season.
The Islanders will wrap up their four-game road swing on Sunday, when they head to Houston for a 1 p.m. matchup with Houston Baptist. Updates will be provided as they become available on Twitter (@IslandersSoccer).
