Islanders Soccer Heads to ACU for Friday Matchup
CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's soccer team will take to the road this Friday, as it squares off with Abilene Christian for the first time in program history. The matchup, which kicks off at 4 p.m., is the second game in a string of four straight on the road for the Islanders.
ACU is having a strong first season in the Southland Conference and Division I, as the Wildcats bring an 11-3-1 overall record and a 5-3-0 league mark into Friday's match. Abilene played only one Division I foe in its non-conference schedule, earning a tie against UTEP.
The Wildcats opened league play 4-1-0, but have lost two of their last three games – shutout defeats at the hands of two of the top programs in the league – Oral Roberts and Stephen F. Austin. ACU is the only team that has knocked off Southeastern Louisiana in conference action.
Andrea Carpenter has led the Wildcat offense, notching nine goals and five assists for a team-best 23 points on the year. Natalie Throneberry is second on the team with her five goals and 11 points, playing in all 15 games but starting only five. In net, Kelsey Dombrowski has been stellar, posting a 0.71 goals-against average and an .867 save percentage with her 7-2-0 record.
The Islanders are coming off a tough weekend, in which they were dealt 3-0 defeats by Incarnate Word and Lamar. A&M-Corpus Christi is 1-6-0 in conference action, including a 1-0 win over McNeese State in overtime. In their debut season, the Islanders are 2-11-0, with their other victory a 2-1 triumph over UTSA on Sept. 6.
Yvette Franco continues to lead the team with her eight goals and 19 points on the season, and her three assists also top the squad. Alyssa Miller has chipped in three goals, including the game-winner over MSU. Audrey Baldwin has been stellar in goal, as the keeper leads the league with 100 saves and is sixth in the nation in that category.
The Islanders will be off on Sunday, but the team will be staying in tune with their sport, as they practice and take in the US Women's National Team's contest against Australia at the Alamodome in San Antonio.
