UIW Topples Islanders Soccer, 3-0

CORPUS CHRISTI – Incarnate Word scored two second-half goals in a span of 4:05 to pull past the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's soccer team in a 3-0 victory on Friday at Dugan Stadium. Audrey Baldwin made 11 saves in a losing effort for the Islanders.

"Today's result was very difficult because it was so uncharacteristic of this group," head coach Shanna Caldwell said. "We were very late reacting to the play and just missing effort across the board. We had some individuals play well but we need to be playing as a whole unit.

"I think it does say a lot about our team that we went this deep into the season without having this type of game," she added. "From here we bounce back and the team has to regroup and be ready to go on Sunday at Lamar."

The Cardinals held the advantage in play early, but Baldwin was able to keep the visitors off the scoreboard until the 24th minute. That was when UIW opened the scoring with Sarah Flores converting for her third goal of the season. An Islanders defender tried to play a ball back to Baldwin, but Flores was able to beat the keeper to the ball, used a touch to get past her and put it into the back of the net at 23:43.

The score remained that way until halftime, and the Islanders came out with a spark, as Jenny Hwang had a strong opportunity in the 50th minute, but was denied by Kowalik. The Cardinals countered, and Flores sent a long ball deep in the air to a streaking Katie Miller, who went 1-v-1 with Baldwin and was able to send it into the right-hand corner of the net to make it 2-0 at 49:52.

Incarnate Word added to its advantage just over four minutes later. Abigail Koenigs worked the ball down the left side and sent a ball toward the box. There, Sydney Solomon was able to let loose a shot and beat a diving Baldwin to the left side to make it 3-0 at 53:57.

The Islanders will hit the road next with a contest at Lamar on Sunday in Beaumont. The game is scheduled to kick off at 1 p.m. For in-game updates, be sure to follow the official Twitter feed of Islanders Soccer, @IslandersSoccer.
