CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's soccer team will head to Austin for an exhibition contest on Friday, Aug. 16. The game, which is slated to start at 7 p.m., will be televised live on the Longhorn Network.
Admission to the game, at Mike A. Myers Stadium and Soccer Field, is free for all.
This will be the final tune-up for the Islanders before they play host to the inaugural regular-season match in program history on Friday, Aug. 23. The match against Houston will also feature the Grand Opening of the Dugan Family Soccer & Track Stadium, the multi-million dollar home of the Islanders Soccer Program. The ceremony starts at 4:55 p.m. with the game to follow immediately afterward at 5.
The Islanders are entering their first season as a varsity program, a year and a half after head coach Shanna Caldwell was hired to start the program in January 2012. A&M-Corpus Christi features 25 players on its roster – 17 freshmen to go along with eight transfers. Among those are three sophomores, four juniors and one senior, with four players having played at the Division I level in their careers.
A&M-Corpus Christi is coming off an impressive performance in a preseason scrimmage at Houston-Victoria in which it defeated the Jaguars 4-0 and outshot UHV 24-1. Alyssa Miller scored a pair of goals in the victory, while Rachel Keeley and Hannah Joseph each put a ball in the back of the net as well.
