Golf Heads to Magnolia for 2014 Southland Championship
MAGNOLIA, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi golf team will wrap up the 2013-14 campaign this week with the 2014 Southland Conference Women's Golf Championship, beginning Tuesday, April 15, at High Meadow Ranch Golf Club. It marks the first time the course has hosted the event.
The course has been laid out to a par-72 with a length of 6,258 yards. Teams will play 18 holes each day, Tuesday through Thursday, in the 54-hole event. The champion will earn the Southland's automatic berth to an NCAA Regional.
"This season has had its ups and downs, but we've shown at times that we can play with any of the teams in our conference," head coach Carol Blackmar said. "This week is our chance to focus and put together three of our best rounds of the season. If we do that, we'll be right in the mix for a conference title on Thursday afternoon."
The Islanders will be paired with Stephen F. Austin in the opening round. Freshman Claudia Galindo will be the first to tee off, at 8:40 a.m. on Tuesday, followed by her classmate, Ana Paredes (8:48). Seniors Krista Fenniak (8:56) and Lindsay Biehler (9:04) will follow, with junior Vanessa Johnson (9:12) closing out the Islanders' lineup.
This year will mark the second time the Southland Women's Golf Championship will be held at a truly neutral site. Lamar has won the most Southland tournament titles with four followed by Sam Houston State with two and A&M-Corpus Christi (2009) with one.
Lamar enters the event with the highest ranking among Southland squads, as the Cardinals look to repeat their 2013 title. Oral Roberts and Houston Baptist will play alongside Lamar in the opening round, with their first golfers teeing off at 10 a.m. Central Arkansas, McNeese State and Sam Houston State will tee off beginning at 9:20 a.m., just after the Islanders. Incarnate Word and New Orleans will be paired together, as the first teams to tee off, at 8 a.m. UIW will not be eligible for the team title, as it is still in transitional status on its way to full Division I membership.
Live scoring for the 2014 Southland Conference Women's Golf Championship will be available at www.southland.org. Updates on the Islanders will also be provided on Twitter (@IslandersGolf) throughout the tournament.
