Golf Sits Ninth After Day One of Husky Invitational
HOUSTON – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi golf team sits in ninth place through the first two rounds of the HBU Husky Invitational, hosted by Houston Baptist University at Riverbend Country Club. The Islanders shot a 664 (329-335) on the opening day of the event.
Louisiana-Monroe, Lamar and Central Arkansas are locked in a three-way tie after the first two rounds, with each team shooting a 619. ULM placed three players in the top 10 to shoot 308-311 on Monday, while the top four players for the Cardinals are all in the top 23. UCA saw Kendra Mann take the overall lead with a 149 through the first two rounds (77-72).
The Islanders saw Lindsay Biehler and Vanessa Johnson shoot 78 in the opening round to lead the squad. Ana Paredes (84) and Claudia Galindo (89) also scored as the team posted a first-round 329 to sit in ninth through the opening 18 holes. Krista Fenniak was unable to play for the Islanders after suffering an injury in last week's UALR Women's Golf Classic, leaving A&M-Corpus Christi with just four players for today's proceedings.
In the afternoon, Biehler shot an 80 to sit in a tie for 20th with a 158 through the first 36 holes. Johnson struggled in the afternoon session, posting an 85 to sit in 33rd at 163. Paredes remained consistent with an 84 in the second round, while Galindo cut a few strokes off her first round total with an 86.
A&M-Corpus Christi will return to the course on Tuesday morning for the final 18 holes. The Islanders will be paired with Sam Houston State and Oklahoma City in the last round of the Invite.
