CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi golf team improved for the third consecutive round to post a 12th-place finish at the Rio Verde Invitational. The Islanders delivered a final-round 306 to finish with a 940 (322-312-306) at the event.
Senior Krista Fenniak and junior Vanessa Johnson each shot 73 in the final round of the Invitational, which was played on the Quail Run Course at Rio Verde Country Club. Fenniak finished in 16th with a three-round 228 (80-75-73), while Johnson was just one stroke back in 21st (78-78-73—229). Lindsay Biehler (80-77-80) and Ana Paredes (84-82-80) each shot 80 on the final day of the event.
Montana's Tara Green gathered medalist honors after delivering a 219 (72-76-71) for the event. Xavier's Shane Crutchfield finished as runner-up, two strokes back with a 221 (73-75-73), while Ball State's Jenna Hague (74-77-71—222) and Northern Arizona's Jacquie LeMarr (73-75-74—222) tied for third.
Crutchfield led Xavier to the team title (303-298-299—900), with Montana finishing just five strokes back with a 905 (298-306-301). Toledo (308-304-302—914) and Wichita State (299-304-314—917) finished third and fourth, respectively, while host Western Michigan (303-307-311—921) and Northern Arizona (304-314-303—921) tied for fifth.
The Islanders will now have two weeks away from competition before they travel to Little Rock, Ark., for the UALR Women's Golf Classic on March 24-25.
