HUNTSVILLE, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's golf team shot a final-round 313 on Tuesday at Raven's Nest Golf Club to finish in sixth place at the Harold Funston Invitational with a three-round 919. Host Sam Houston State won the team title by shooting a three-round 874.
Vanessa Johnson finished in a tie for ninth with a three-round 222 after delivering a 75 in the final 18 holes. Lindsay Biehler was tied for 17th (72-76-78—226) and fellow senior Krista Fenniak finished 28th (78-76-78—232) at the event. Freshmen Ana Paredes (79-78-82—239, 37th) and Claudia Galindo (82-88-85—255, 49th) rounded out the individual results for the Islanders.
The host Bearkats shot a 290 on the final day to surge past Lamar and garner the team title. SHSU placed four players in the top eight individually. LU's Wenny Chang took medalist honors with a 215 (71-71-75), edging teammate Ghni Ngo and Incarnate Word's Flower Castillo by a single stroke.
Lamar shot an 877 for the three-round event, while UIW finished third with an 893. Oral Roberts (901) and Stephen F. Austin (911) rounded out the top five, with the Islanders' 919 placing them sixth.
A&M-Corpus Christi is back in action on Oct. 20, when it heads to Lakewood Ranch, Fla., for the Pat Bradley Invitational. The three-day, three-round event is hosted by Florida International at the elite Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club.
