CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's golf team will open its 2013-14 schedule with a trip to Lincoln, Neb., for the Chip-N-Club Invitational. It will be the second time in three years that the Islanders have traveled to the event, which is hosted by the University of Nebraska.
The event will be held at Wilderness Ridge Golf Course, which is laid out to a par-72 and 6,251 yards. After a practice round on Sunday, Sept. 8, the teams will play the first 36 holes on Monday, Sept. 9, at 9 a.m. The final 18 holes will tee off with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start on Tuesday, Sept. 10.
A total of 13 teams will take part in the event, with fellow Southland programs Central Arkansas and Houston Baptist joining the Islanders in Lincoln. Along with the Huskers, fellow Big Ten squad Iowa will be at the event, as well as Creighton, Missouri State, Nebraska-Omaha, North Dakota State, South Dakota, Southern Miss, UMKC and Wichita State.
SMU took home the title of the event in 2012, led by medalist Alexandra Rossi. Among teams returning for this year's Invitational, North Dakota State was the highest finisher, taking third. Iowa (fifth), Nebraska (seventh), HBU (eighth) and Missouri State (eighth) also finished in the top 10 a year ago.
The Islanders will be a new-look squad after the graduation of regulars Nikki Dunn and Taylor Slagle. Returning atop the Islanders lineup is Second Team All-Southland honoree Vanessa Johnson, who led the team in stroke average last season. Seniors Krista Fenniak and Lindsay Biehler also return to the Islanders lineup after strong seasons a year ago. A pair of newcomers will round out the squad in Lincoln, with freshmen Ana Paredes (San Antonio) and Claudia Galindo (Madrid, Spain) making their collegiate debuts.
