Johnson Named Second Team All-Southland, Dunn Earns Honorable Mention

CORPUS CHRISTI – Sophomore Vanessa Johnson (Corpus Christi/Carroll) has been named to the All-Southland Conference Women's Golf Second Team, the league announced today. Johnson was joined by senior Nikki Dunn in earning recognition from the Southland, as Dunn collected honorable mention.

"I'm really proud that both Vanessa and Nikki were recognized by the conference for their accomplishments," head coach Carol Blackmar said. "Vanessa was outstanding in the fall, and really finished strong with a tremendous performance at the Southland Championship. She has such a bright future ahead of her – this won't be the last time she is honored by our league.

"Nikki gave so much to our program over her three years," Blackmar added. "She was a really consistent performer from round to round throughout her career, and I'm so pleased that she will take home honors from the league as a senior."

Johnson led the Islanders and was fifth in the conference with a 76.64 stroke average during the 2012-13 campaign. She twice matched the school record for a single round, posting 69 in the opening rounds of both the SHSU Harold Funston Invitational and the Southland Conference Championship. She had eight rounds of 74 or better out of her 25, and her stroke average was the fifth best in school history.

The sophomore posted three top-10 finishes as an individual, highlighted by medalist honors at the Harold Funston Invite in October and a second-place finish at the Southland Championship in April. She took seventh place in the Bob Hurley ORU Shootout in October as well. In all, she posted five top-20 finishes on the year.

Dunn averaged 77.20 over her nine tournaments on the year, totaling six top-25 performances in 2012-13. Her finest effort came at the UALR Women's Golf Classic, where she posted the lone top-10 performance of her career, coming in fourth in the field of 78 players. She finished 11th at the Islanders Classic in February, and twice came in 13th, at the Funston Invite and the Rio Verde Invitational.

For her career, the native of Harrogate, England, posted an average of 77.74 strokes over her 77 rounds of action, the fourth-best mark in Islanders lore. She played in 27 tournaments in her time as an Islander, and was named the Southland Conference Newcomer of the Year in 2010.

The Islanders finished fifth at the Southland Championships last week, topped by Johnson's second-place performance. For all the latest on the team during the offseason, be sure to follow them on Twitter (@IslandersGolf) and Facebook (IslandersGolf).
