CORPUS CHRISTI – Senior Nikki Dunn sits in third place as the Texas A&M – Corpus Christi women's golf team is tied for sixth through the first round of the Islander Classic, hosted by Corpus Christi Country Club. Play was suspended after the first 18 holes due to high winds in the Corpus Christi area, and the tournament will be shortened to two rounds, with the final 18 holes scheduled to tee off at 8:15 a.m. on Tuesday.
Dunn shot a 76 (38-38) to put her four strokes back of the lead, currently held by Bradley's Danielle Lemak, who shot a 72 (34-38). Chaslyn Chrismer of North Texas is in second with a 73 (36-37) after the opening round, which saw just 15 players break 80 due to the windy conditions.
Lamar and Missouri State are tied for the team lead with a 317, while North Texas sits four strokes back in third place. Oral Roberts and Sam Houston State sit in a tie for fourth at 322, with the Islanders tied with Oklahoma City University at 325 in sixth.
Dunn was the only Islander to break 80, with the remaining four players posting remarkably similar rounds. Vanessa Johnson (40-43), Taylor Slagle (43-40) and Lindsay Biehler (37-46) each shot 83, while Krista Fenniak delivered an 84 (45-39). Cristina Reynoso (41-43—84) and Nicole Shea (42-52—94) also played as individuals at the event.
Round two is slated for an 8:15 shotgun start, with Dunn slated to tee off on the fourth, Slagle and Johnson on the fifth, and Biehler and Fenniak on the sixth. The Islanders will be paired with Sam Houston State and ORU in the final round.
