CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi women's golf team signed Ana Paredes (San Antonio, Texas) and Claudia Galindo (Madrid, Spain) to National Letters of Intent during the early signing period, head coach Carol Blackmar announced today. The two players will join the Islanders beginning in the 2013-14 academic year.
"We're going to have two big spots to fill next year," Blackmar said, "with Nikki [Dunn] and Taylor [Slagle] graduating. But I think that Ana and Claudia should give us a real shot at picking up right where we left off. They are both talented players who I expect will make a significant impact on our program."
Paredes will join the Islanders after a solid career at Sandra Day O'Connor High School. As a junior, she played in 11 tournaments, averaging 77.0 strokes per round. Her career personal best is a 69, and she has posted a low three-round total of 226 in her career. She led her team to its third straight district championship and earned medalist honors for District 27-5A. She finished fifth at the Region IV tournament, and was selected to represent South Texas at the Ryder Cup Junior Golf Academy over the summer.
"Ana is already a very good player who should step into our starting lineup immediately," Blackmar said. "The great thing about her game is she also has a good deal of untapped potential and we have very high hopes for her and her career here at Texas A&M – Corpus Christi."
Galindo has been ranked as high as eighth in the Madrid Regional Under-21 rankings in her young career. She was the top-ranked player in the Under-16 group in 2011 and was the champion of the Madrid Regional Pitch & Putt Senior Championship. The short-game specialist nearly took home the Pitch & Putt Spanish Championship as well, but finished third after a playoff.
"Claudia has a very impressive resume and golf background," Blackmar said. "We anticipate she will make a significant impact on our team, both as a player and as a leader and we are very excited to have her."
The 2013 Islanders will open their spring campaign on Monday, Feb. 25, as they play host to the annual Islanders Classic at Corpus Christi Country Club. All seven players are returning from last year's squad, led by a pair of seniors, Nikki Dunn and Taylor Slagle.
