Vanessa Johnson Named Student-Athlete of the Week

CORPUS CHRISTI – Vanessa Johnson has been named the Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by Pepsi. Johnson earned the award for her performance last week at the Harold Funston Invitational.

The Corpus Christi native won her first tournament as a collegiate golfer, taking the title at the Harold Funston Invitational in Huntsville, Texas. The sophomore matched the school record with a 69 in the opening round of the tourney, then followed that up with a 72 and a 73 to win medalist honors. Johnson finished four shots ahead of her nearest competitor, posting a 214 for her third career top-10 and her second in a row. She has led the Islanders in each of their three tournaments this fall.

Johnson and the rest of the women's golf will return to action at the FIU Pat Bradley Invitational on Oct. 21-23. It will be the final event of the fall for the Islanders.
