HUNTSVILLE, Texas – Corpus Christi native Vanessa Johnson sits in second place with a 1-under 141 (69-72) and the Texas A&M – Corpus Christi golf team sits in third as a team after shooting 594 (298-296) for the opening two rounds of the Harold Funston Invitational, hosted by Sam Houston State. Junior Krista Fenniak is just four shots back of Johnson after delivering a 145 (73-72) to sit in fourth.
"This was exactly the kind of performance we needed as a team," head coach Carol Blackmar said. "Everybody made contributions, we limited our mistakes and we got strong performances at the top from Vanessa and Krista. Now we just need to follow through and finish things off in the final 18 holes tomorrow."
St. Edward's leads all teams with a 587 (290-297) through the opening two rounds, while host and defending champion Sam Houston State is two shots ahead of the Islanders with a 592 (297-295). Fellow Southland foe Lamar is just three shots behind the Islanders at 597 (300-297).
Johnson matched the school record with a 69 in the morning session, a mark most recently set by senior Ryann White at the same tournament a year ago. The Carroll product is just two shots behind leader Wallis Spears, who shot 139 (68-71) for St. Edward's. SHSU's Nicole Budnik (71-73—144) is one shot ahead of Fenniak in third place, while two other golfers are one shot behind Fenniak in fifth.
Taylor Slagle sits in 22nd after delivering a 153 for the opening day of the event, following a 78 in the opening round with a 75 in the afternoon. Nikki Dunn is 28th with a 155 (78-77) for the Islanders, while Cristina Reynoso sits in a tie for 39th with a 164 (81-83).
