Islanders Golf 10th Through First Day of OSU Invitational

CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi golf team shot an opening-round 298 and followed that up with a 313 in the afternoon session to sit in 10th place through two rounds of the Oregon State Invitational. Vanessa Johnson leads the way with a 7-over 151 through 36 holes. The final 18 holes of the event will be played tomorrow at Trysting Tree Golf Club.

The Islanders sat in sixth place through the first 18 holes of action after an impressive plus-10 in the elite event. Their second-round performance saw them fall back to 10th in the stadndings. The team will tee off from the 10th hole, starting with Taylor Slagle at 8 a.m. PT, in the final round tomorrow.

In addition to Johnson's 151 (74-77), Lindsay Biehler (76-78) and Krista Fenniak (74-80) each posted 154 on the day. Senior Nikki Dunn shot a 155 (74-81), while Slagle added a 159 (81-78) for the Islanders.

Dunn got off to a tough start in the opening round, carding a double bogey on the 13th, before notching three straight pars and then a bogey on 17. That's when the senior locked in, with seven pars and two birdies on the next nine holes to drop back to +1. She countered a bogey on the ninth with a birdie on 11 before closing the round with a five on the par-4 12th to sit at +2.

Johnson had an eventful opening in the first 18 holes, going par-birdie-double out of the gate. She then settled in with 12 pars and a bogey over the next 13 holes to move to 2-over. The Corpus Christi native finished her opening round with a bogey on 12 and a birdie 2 on 13 to card a 74 of her own.

Fenniak had a consistent opening round, posting two bogeys and a birdie in her first four holes. She followed that with par on holes 1-4, but bogeys on the fourth and the seventh set her back to +3. The native Canadian responded with six pars and a birdie (on the 13th) to finish with a 74, the second-lowest round of her career.

Biehler delivered a 76 for the opening 18 to help the Islanders sit sixth through the first round. The junior, who retooled her swing in the offseason, got off to a shaky start with a double on the 14th, her opening hole. But from then on, she was rock solid, carding 13 pars, three bogeys and a birdie (on the 1st) to sit +4 after the opening round. Slagle shot an 81 in the first round for the Islanders.

Johnson had a wild start to her second round, opening with a birdie on 14, then going bogey-par-double-bogey to fall back to plus-three on her way to the first. On the front nine, she carded pars on eight holes, with her only blemish a double on the 6th. After a bogey on 10, she bounced back with two pars, then finished her round with a birdie on 13 to close the round with a 77.

In the afternoon, Biehler again showed her consistency. After two pars and then a bogey on 16, she delivered par on nine of the next 11 holes to sit at 3-over heading to the turn. A bogey on 10 and a double on 12 pushed her to plus-6, and then she finished off the day with a par on the 13th for a 78.

Slagle improved over the final 18, starting with four pars and a bogey out of the gate. A double and three bogeys on the front nine moved her to plus-6, and she trimmed a stroke with a birdie on the 11th. She closed bogey-par-par to finish her round with a 78.

Fenniak delivered a roller coaster of a round over her second 18. The junior finished atop the team with four birdies, but also posted three doubles and a triple – all on the back nine. She closed her day with bogeys on 13 and 14 for an 80 in the afternoon session.

Dunn's second round started with a bogey on 13, followed by a par on 14 and a double on 15 to move to plus-3 on the round. She then responded with five pars and a bogey over the next six holes to sit at plus-4 heading to the fourth. The next four holes, though, saw three bogeys and a double, as the senior fell to plus-9. She bounced back with a birdie on the ninth, but went bogey-par-par on her final three holes to enter the clubhouse with an 81.
