BLANCO, Texas – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi golf team will return to the links on Monday, April 16, for the opening 18 holes of the Southland Conference Women's Golf Championship. The event, hosted by Texas State, will be played at Vaaler Creek Golf Club in Blanco, Texas, and will be three days of 18 holes each day.
The Islanders will send the fivesome of Nikki Dunn, Vanessa Johnson, Ryann White, Taylor Slagle and Krista Fenniak to the Championship. Texas A&M – Corpus Christi finished fourth at last year's event, with White taking third place as an individual. The champion of the event will receive a berth to the NCAA Championship.
Fenniak will be the first to tee off for the Islanders, as she is slated for a 9:20 start playing in the number five position along with Lamar's Lauren Van Gerven. The Edmonton, Alberta, native played in seven events for the Islanders on the season, averaging 80.5 strokes in her 20 rounds of action. Her most impressive finish was 26th place at the elite Rio Verde Invitational, and six of her rounds were of 77 or better.
Slagle is set to tee off at 9:28 alongside Sarah Nicholas for the Cardinals in the number four slot for their respective teams. The junior from Southlake, Texas, has participated in eight events on the season, totaling 22 rounds for the Islanders. She has been one of the most consistent players for the team, averaging 78.9 strokes per round, with 16 of her 22 rounds being between 77 and 81. Her best finish was 13th at the Chip-N-Club Invitational, hosted by the University of Nebraska in September.
White will begin her opening round at 9:36 with LU's Katelyn McDougal. The senior from Lubbock has three top-10 finishes on the year, including a second-place finish at the Harold Funston Invitational and a fourth place at Rio Verde. She has struggled as of late, with seven of her last eight rounds of 80 or above, but still holds a 78.4 stroke average for the third-best mark on the team. She is the lone Islander to have played in every event this season.
Johnson will tee off at 9:44 with fellow freshman Ghni Ngo from Lamar. The Corpus Christi (Carroll) product has had a stellar debut season, as she leads the team with her 77.8 stroke average on the year. She has three finishes in the top 13 this spring, as she has taken part in seven tournaments in her young college career. She has posted 10 straight sub-80 rounds, including five of 76 or better.
The final Islander to tee off will be Dunn at the number one position, where she will play alongside Julie Aime with a 9:52 start. The junior from Harrogate, England, has averaged 78.2 over her 22 rounds on the season. She has played in every event but one, as she missed the HBU Husky Invitational at the beginning of April because of injury. Her best finish was 11th at the Bob Hurley ORU Shootout, as she had nine rounds of 77 or better on the year.
