MISSOURI CITY – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi women's golf team posted a final-round 310 to finish in sixth place at the HBU Husky Invitational on Tuesday at Riverbend Country Club. Three Islanders – freshman Vanessa Johnson (Corpus Christi/Carroll), junior Taylor Slagle (Southlake/Southlake Carroll) and sophomore Krista Fenniak (Edmonton, Alberta) – finished in the top 17 at the event.
"I was glad to see our players step up in the face of adversity this weekend," head coach Carol Blackmar said. "We came on a couple unexpected situations, and to have the players who we had originally slated three, four and five all finish in the top 17 was good for our team. Now we need to build off of that and get ourselves where we need to be for the conference championship in two weeks."
Johnson posted a final-round 76 to finish in a tie for 12th place with a three-round 230 (76-78-76) to lead the Islanders. Day one leader Slagle shot 79 in the final 18 holes to finish two strokes behind her teammate with a 232 (78-75-79) for 14th. Fenniak's 78 in the final round netted her a 235 (77-80-78) at the event to place 17th, the best finish of the sophomore's Islanders career. Lindsay Biehler posted a clutch 77 in her final round for a 250 (91-82-77), while Ryann White posted a 259 for the event.
Lamar took the team title with a 910 (308-308-294) to take the team title, while Sam Houston State finished in second with a 919 (309-299-311). SHSU's Shelby Hardy and McLennan Community College's Alyssa Smith tied atop the individual leaderboard with a 222, but Hardy was awarded medalist honors for having the lower score in the final round.
Host Houston Baptist and Redlands CC tied for third, while the Islanders (322-315-310—947) finished just one stroke behind McLennan, which took fifth with a 946 (315-321-310). Two other Southland schools were in the field – McNeese State, which finished seventh at 954 (317-322-315), and Stephen F. Austin, which was 10th at 987 (328-337-322).
The Islanders will now be off for nearly two weeks, as they return to action with the Southland Women's Golf Championship, from April 16-18, at Vaaler Creek Golf Club in Blanco, Texas. Texas State will be the host team for this year's Championship, which will be three rounds over three days.
