CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi golf team will open its spring schedule on Monday, Feb. 27, with the Islanders Classic at the Corpus Christi Country Club. The 14-team event will tee off at 8:30 a.m. shotgun start for Rounds 1 and 2 on Monday, with Round 3 slated to start at 8:30 on Tuesday.
"We really love starting the spring season at the Corpus Christi Country Club," head coach Carol Blackmar said. "Between the familiarity of playing our home course and the support we receive from the staff and the community, it is always a special event for the Islanders. We can't wait to tee off our spring season Monday."
The Islanders are one of six Southland teams taking part in the Classic, as they will be joined by Central Arkansas, Lamar, Sam Houston State, Stephen F. Austin and UTSA. Future Southland member Houston Baptist as well as fellow Texas schools Texas-Pan American, Texas A&M – Kingsville and McLennan Community College will take part as well. Other teams in the event are North Dakota State, UMKC, Bradley and Oklahoma City University.
Senior Ryann White will play in the number one spot for the Islanders, while junior Nikki Dunn lines up at number two. Corpus Christi native Vanessa Johnson, a freshman, will tee off at number three, with sophomore Lindsay Biehler and junior Taylor Slagle rounding out the Islanders five. Krista Fenniak, Cristina Reynoso and Nicole Shea will all play as individuals in the Classic. The Islanders will tee off on holes 1-3 in the first two rounds.
In last year's event, A&M – Corpus Christi tied for fifth as a team with Sam Houston State. White finished fourth individually to lead the Islanders, while Katie Belser (T-8th) and Dunn (T-15th) also finished in the top 15. UCA's Julia Roth, who tied for second in 2011, is the top returning player in the field.
