CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi golf team began its 2012 Spring preseason today, with the team's first practice of the semester at Corpus Christi Country Club. The Islanders will begin their spring campaign in seven weeks at the Islanders Classic on Feb. 27-28.
"It was good to get back on the course and see where we are," head coach Carol Blackmar said. "It was a gorgeous day for golf, and we're really excited to make a run at the 2012 Southland Championship. We obviously have a long way to go, but for day one, it was a good day out on the links."
The Islanders return their top two players from last year in Second Team All-Southland selection Ryann White and Southland Newcomer of the Year Nikki Dunn. The Islanders also have a strong group of newcomers in junior Taylor Slagle, sophomore Krista Fenniak and freshman Vanessa Johnson, in addition to returners Lindsay Biehler, Cristina Reynoso and Nicole Shea.
After the Islanders Classic at the end of February, the Islanders hit the road for the Rio Verde Invitational in Rio Verde, N.M., starting on March 9. That will be followed by the Bucknell Women's Invitational (Las Vegas, Nev.) and the UALR Women's Golf Classic (Little Rock, Ark.) to close out March. The regular season will conclude with the HBU Husky Invitational, beginning on April 2.
The Islanders will look to improve on last year's fourth-place finish at the Southland Championships when they head to Vaaler Creek Golf Club. UTSA won the team title in 2011, with Lamar's Stine Pedersen taking the individual title in a playoff. The Championships start on April 16, 2012, in Blanco, Texas.
