MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi golf team wrapped up its fall season with a seventh-place finish at the 2011 Memphis Women's Fall Invitational on Tuesday. Senior Ryann White (Lubbock, Texas/Coronado) finished in a tie for 10th with a 229 (82-72-75).
Host Memphis and Samford tied for the team title with a 913, while Southland foe Sam Houston State took third with a 922. The Islanders carded a 942 for the 54-hole tournament, just three shots out of sixth place.
Freshman Vanessa Johnson (Corpus Christi/Carroll) tied for 33rd with a 238 (81-78-79), while junior Taylor Slagle (Southlake/Southlake) was one stroke behind (81-78-80) in 35th. Junior Nikki Dunn (78-78-85) and sophomore Lindsay Biehler tied for 41st (83-77-81) by posting 241 for the event.
"We were playing our best golf of the weekend, and maybe the season, when play was suspended on Monday," head coach Carol Blackmar said. "We just couldn't carry over the momentum to Tuesday morning. With the fall season finished, we have some things that we have to work on heading into the spring."
The Islanders started the day by wrapping up the second round, which was postponed due to darkness on Monday with 13 holes in the books. White, who had been two-under at the time of suspension, lost her momentum overnight and suffered bogeys on three of the last five holes to finish one-over with a 72.
Biehler was plus-1 over her final five holes to deliver a 77, while Johnson shot three-over in that stretch for a 78. Slagle had a similar fate, while Dunn was plus-2 to shoot a 78 as well. With a second-round 305, the Islanders posted the second-lowest score of any team over the 18 holes.
In the third round, White again paced the group, shooting a four-over 75. Johnson's 79 was the second-best score for the Islanders, while Slagle posted an 80 in the final round. Biehler was the last scorer for Texas A&M – Corpus Christi with her 81.
The event was the final one of the fall season for Islanders Golf. The team posted its top finish at the Harold Funston Invitational, in Huntsville, taking home fourth place. The spring schedule, which will be announced in the coming weeks, will culminate with the 2012 Southland Women's Golf Championship, held in Kyle, Texas, on April 16-18, 2012.
