CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi women's golf team will kick off its 2011-12 season on Monday, as the Islanders take part in the Chip-N-Club Invitational. The two-day, 54-hole event will be played at the Country Club of Lincoln (Neb.) and is hosted by the University of Nebraska.
The five Islanders who will compete in the event are senior Ryann White, junior Nikki Dunn, sophomore Lindsey Biehler and newcomers junior Taylor Slagle and sophomore Krista Fenniak. The top four scores of each round will count for the team.
"This will be a great test for our team right out of the gate," head coach Carol Blackmar said. "The Chip-N-Club has a strong field from all over the country, and it will challenge our team to rise to the occasion. I'm excited to see what both our returners and newcomers will bring to the course."
The 16-team field includes three other Southland foes – Lamar, McNeese State and Sam Houston State. Houston Baptist and SMU will also make the trip to Lincoln from the Lone Star State. Akron, Creighton, Florida Gulf Coast, Iowa, Missouri State, North Dakota State, Redlands CC, South Dakota, Wichita State and host Nebraska round out the field.
In the 2010 version of the event, a pair of Southland schools finished in the top five. UTSA took fourth, while Texas State was fifth in the Invitational, which was shortened to two rounds due to rain.
The event will begin with a practice round on Sunday, followed by 36 holes on Monday starting at 9 a.m. The final 18 holes will be played on Tuesday, with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.
Live scoring will be updated every three holes on both golfstat.com and Nebraska's official athletic site, Huskers.com. Updates on the Islanders will be posted on the Islanders' official Twitter feed, @Go_Islanders, and the golf team's feed, @IslandersGolf.
