Nikki Dunn was named the Southland Conference Newcomer of the Year and Ryann White earned Second Team All-SLC honors, the conference announced today. The league awards were voted on by the conference's coaches and sports information directors.
Dunn, in her first year with the Islanders after transferring from Florida International, earned her honors after posting five top-20 finishes as a sophomore. She was joined in the individual awards by a trio from UTSA. Paola Valerio was named the Southland Player of the Year, Fabiola Arriaga was named Freshman of the Year and Carrie Parnaby was named Coach of the Year.
White narrowly missed selection to the conference's first team after finishing third at the Southland Women's Golf Championship. She led the Islanders with a 75.93 stroke average in her nine tournaments during the school year, posting five top-10 finishes individually. In addition to her finish at the conference tourney, she twice finished fourth, once at the Islander Classic and again at the UALR Women's Golf Classic. She was named Southland Golfer of the Month for March, as she took 10th at the elite Rio Verde Invitational and fourth at UALR. The junior had 14 rounds of 75 or lower out of her 27 total rounds.
Dunn averaged 77.59 over her 27 rounds of action during the 2010-11 campaign. Seven of her last 10 rounds were of 77 and under, including a pair of par-72s in her final four tournaments. She tied for 11th at the UALR Women's Golf Classic a week after tying for 12th at the elite Rio Verde Invitational. She turned in a top-20 finish in five of her last six tournaments.
The Islanders concluded the 2010-11 campaign with a fourth-place finish at the Southland Championship, held at Corpus Christi Country Club. The Islanders had a third-day 306 to finish with a three-round 930 (313-311-306), improving each round of the event. UTSA took the team title with a 900 (306-297-297), while Lamar had a 907 (297-313-297) to finish second. Texas State was third with a three-round 925 (308-313-304).
