ISLANDERS CARD BEST ROUND OF SPRING CLIMB TO FIFTH
HUNTSVILLE - Courtney Peeler and Katie Belser fired matching 75s Tuesday leading the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi golf team to its best score of the spring with a 304 at the Southland Conference Championship. The Islanders now stand fifth after 36 holes at the par-71 Ravens Nest Golf Course.
"The scores for all of the teams were low, and I thought we played better today," said Islander head coach Carol Blackmar. "We had our best round of the spring."
Peeler opened the day with a double bogey but battled to finish the final 17 holes at two-over. Belser continued to impress shooting a personal-best 75. Peeler enters the final day tied for 12th. Belser is tied for 18th at 11-over with Cecilia Jeon.
Jeon and Ryann White each shaved a stroke off their scores from the opening day. Jeon had a 76, while White had a 7-over 78. Outside a three-hole stretch at the turn where she was six over, White was 1-over on the day. Chelsey Watkins improved seven strokes on the second day to finish with an 81.
"What Katie is doing right now is awesome," said Blackmar. "To step in perform like this after not competing for several years is amazing. My hat's off to her.
"Courtney has been Courtney. She's been really steady and is one the edge of having a great round."
With a 304, the Islanders surpassed McNeese State by a shot to climb a spot to fifth. A&M-Corpus Christi is fifth at 613 (309-304). The Cowgirls are a shot back at 614 (298-316). Sam Houston continues to lead after a sizzling 1-over, 285 as a team which is the lowest 18-hole score in SLC Championship history. They lead Central Arkansas by 10 shots. The Bearkats have a 36-hole score of 578 (293-285), while the Bears are at 588 (293-295). Texas State is third at 593 (297-296) and UTSA climbed to fourth at 596 (307-289).
Individually, UCA's Rebecca Sorensen leads after two rounds by two strokes with back-to-back 70s. SHSU's Kirsten Spittler is second at 142 following a 3-under par 68, while teammate Meghan Musk is third at 143.
The final round concludes on Wednesday morning.
