ISLANDER GOLFERS SECOND AFTER 36 HOLES AT SLC CHAMPIONSHIP

LAKE CHARLES, La. – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi golf team picked the best time of the year to post its best 36-hole total of the spring firing a 612 (308-304) through two rounds to finish the opening day of the rain-delayed Southland Conference Championship in a tie for second with UTSA one-shot behind host McNeese State on Tuesday at the Lake Charles Country Club.

Courtney Peeler leads the Islanders with a 36-hole total of 150 (76-74) and is in a tie for fifth overall just two shots behind overall leader Lacy McKinley of McNeese State. She had the team's lowest round of the day with a 74 in the second round. Peeler, who had four birdies on the first day to lead the team, tied with for the team's low round in the first 18 holes with a 76 along with Ashley Watkins.

Watkins, who was ninth a year ago, is tied for eighth for the Islanders at 9-over par with a 153 (76-77). Melissa Fahey is 17th at 11-over (79-76) with a 155 one shot ahead of teammate Ashley Olynick who is tied for 18th at 156. Ryann White overcame an 83 on the first round of the day to shoot a 77 and is tied for 27th at 16 over with a 160.

"We left a few shots out there, but we played really, really well today," said Islander head coach Carol Blackmar. "We gave ourselves a shot to win tomorrow. We need all four to contribute again.

"We played as a team with everyone contributing. We showed tremendous patience if we got in a bind and made smart decisions."

McNeese State leads the team scoring with a two-round total of 611. UTSA and the Islanders are second after carding identical 612s. Lamar is fourth with a 613 (310-303), while Texas State had the lowest score for 18 holes by a team in round two with a 302 to finish the opening day at 615 – three shots behind the Islanders and four out of the top spot. Central Arkansas finished in sixth 14 shots of the lead with McNeese State 18 shots behind. Nicholls State is eighth at 64-over par.

The tournament concludes tomorrow with tee time scheduled for 8 a.m. Live scoring is available on www.southland.org.
