Waco - The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's golf team finished in 11th place on Tuesday with a three-round score of 956 at the Baylor Spring Invitational, held at the Twin Rivers Golf Club in Waco. The top finisher for the Islanders was Courtney Peeler in a tie for 27th place.

Illinois State was the winner of the tournament, finishing with a final score of 927 to take the top overall spot by four strokes over second-place New Mexico State. Host school Baylor finished in a tie for third place with Missouri State at a score of 933.

Individually for the Islanders, Peeler carded the top score with a three-round total of 236 to put her in a tie for 27th place. Second for the Islanders was Ryann White, shooting a 239 total to finish in a tie for 32nd in the individual scoring. Ashley Watkins scored a 241 to tie for 38th place while Ashley Olynick and Melissa Fahey finished with identical 246 scores to tie for 51st place.

Ashley Watkins had the best day for the Islanders, shooting a 77 to lead TAMUCC in the final round. Peeler finished with a 79, Fahey and White each had an 81 and Olynick shot an 86.

"I thought we could compete well and finish in the top 10 at this tournament," said head coach Carol Blackmar. "We competed well today, we just got too far behind on the first day."

The Islanders finished the third round with a 318 total, just six shots off the pace of 312 shot by the top two finishers in the tournament, Illinois State and New Mexico State.

"We have to work on some things to finish rounds better," said Blackmar. "We have a couple of players still struggling and the course played hard this week.

"The greens were hard and fast and the winds really picked up out there, making it too far to come back from."

The Islanders will next play at the UALR Invitational in Little Rock, Arkansas on March 30-31.
