ROCKPORT Freshman Ryann White shined on the first day of Stripes Islander Classic with rounds of 75 and 78 to end the first of day of the tournament in seventh combining with the rest of her Texas A&M-Corpus Christi teammates to finish the day eighth out of 15 teams.
White opened the day with a 75 which was the low round of the day for the Islanders and closed with a 78 to finish at 153. She is tied with two others at just four shots behind tri-leaders Maggie Welch of McNeese, Lamar's Therese Nilsson and Shelly Martinez of UTSA who had scores of 149. Sam Houston State's Wendy Joyner and Olivia Lansing of Drake tied for fourth at 150. McLennan Community College's Haley Hocott was sixth with 152 two shots ahead of White and two others.
Lamar fired a 304 as a team in the second round to take a one shot lead at 617 over UTSA, who opened with a 311 and finished the day with a 307 for 618. Illinois, who led after round one with a 310 carded a 317 the second round to fall to third 10 shots back at 627 and is third. Sam Houston State is fourth (314-314) at 628, with North Texas and Drake tied for fifth one shot behind. Texas-Pan American is seventh at 630 with the Islanders eighth at 631.
Individually for the Islanders, White was seventh at 153 with teammates Ashley Watkins and Ashley Olynick tied for 23rd at 158. Watkins opened the day with a 77 and ended with an 81, while Olynick reversed the scores. Melissa Fahey and Courtney Peeler tied for 55th with two round totals of 165.
The tournament concludes on Tuesday at 8:15 with a shotgun start.
