JONESBORO, Ark. Junior Ashley Watkins fired her best round of the young season Tuesday morning with a 74, but it wasn't enough to hold off a hot Arkansas State team as Texas A&M-Corpus Christi finished fifth at the Lady Red Wolves Classic at Jonesboro Country Club with a score of 936.
Watkins, who twice fired rounds of 72 a year ago, climbed to 13th overall with the 74 as the Islanders matched their best round of the tournament with a 310. Ashley Olynick finished the tournament tied for seventh one stroke ahead of Watkins. After a pair of 76s on Monday, Olynick finished with an 80 for a three-round total of 232. Watkins finished with a 233 after rounds of 81 and 78 on Monday.
Newcomers Courtney Peeler and Ryann White tied for second for the Islanders on the final day with a pair of 78s. Overall, Peeler finished in a tie for 14th two shots in back of Watkins with a 233 (75-82-78). White was 20th overall shooting a 54-hole 237 (79-80-78). Melissa Fahey finished tied for 43rd at 245.
Drake shot a 306 on the final day to seal its win with a 917 (306-305-306 after carding a 611 the first day. Central Arkansas finished in second with a 923 (304-309-310) and was led by individual medalist Nicole Forshner. Murray State was third at 929.(312-305-312).
Arkansas State passed the Islanders by firing a team round of 302, The 302 was the lowest round of the tournament by any team and finished with a 933 (313-318-302). The Red Wolves were led by Cassie Huffer in the final 18 holes. Huffer fired a 69 to place fourth overall with the best round of the tournament. A&M-Corpus Christi ended the 54-hole event with a 936 (310-316-310) to finish three shots back.
The Islanders close out the fall portion of their schedule in two weeks at the Pat Bradley Invitational.
