After four seasons on the sidelines at Texas A&M - Corpus Christi, including two as the associate head coach under Jodi Kest, Robert Robinson, with a career record of 64-93, became the third head coach in Islanders history in 2006. Robinson enters his sixth season at the helm, a program he joined 10 years ago.

During the 2009-10 season, Robinson led the Islanders to a remarkable run through the postseason before falling in the semifinals of the Women's Basketball Invitational (WBI).  The team finished the year with a 24-11 record and the most wins in school history.  They finished third in the regular season league standings and advanced to the championship game of the Southland Conference Tournament for the first time in school history before finishing as the runner-up.  After the conference tournament, they advanced to the WBI where they knocked off the Cal State-Bakersfield Roadrunners and the Washington Huskies before falling to the Memphis Tigers.

Four out of the past five seasons, the Islanders have reached the Southland Conference Tournament and each campaign and has won at least one game in the tournament in three out of four appearances. Robinson has amassed 64 victories during this time and is quickly closing in on former coach Jodi Kest's school record of 73 wins.

The third season of Robinson's tenure was marked by the ability to overcome adversity and fight through any hardship thrown at his team. The Islanders finished 11-19 on the season and qualified for the Southland Conference tournament with a 6-10 conference record despite being devastated by injuries throughout the season. Despite all of those circumstances, the Islanders made a run near the end of the season to qualify for the Southland Tournament for the third consecutive season.

In his second season as head coach, Robinson led his team to a 12-20 record and a semifinal appearance in the Southland Conference tournament. It marked the second semifinals appearance in as many years in the league for the Islanders. They were led by junior center Elisa Beagle, who became the second-leading rebounder in Islander history with 642 and fifth in career blocks with 57.

His first team finished with a 15-16 record and was led by the senior backcourt of Kirbria Lewis and Nicole Duncan. The duo each finished their careers with 1,000-plus points. Lewis became the league's first-ever Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Year, while Duncan was a first-team District VI All-Academic selection. Lewis finished 12th in the nation in steals and at one point led the nation in the category.

Prior to being named head coach, the Midloathian, Texas, native served as the coordinator of recruiting and academics among other duties and was successful in both areas. The Islanders amassed a 73-40 record in his four years on the bench next to Kest. Robinson guided the team to a 69-47 win over Texas-Pan American in the 2004-05 regular-season home finale in Kest's absence.

Academically, A&M-Corpus Christi had the 17th best grade-point average in the NCAA Division I ranks in the spring of 2006. On the floor, Robinson worked with the team's post players.

Robinson began his coaching career in 1990, when he served as a men's student assistant coach at UT Arlington for three years before heading to the western part of the state.

In 1994, he moved to West Texas A&M and served as an assistant women's basketball coach for two years. During his time in Canyon, the Lady Buffs captured back-to-back Lone Star Conference titles (tied in 1995-96) and advanced to finals of the NCAA Division II South Central Regional.

After moving to Central Florida for one year as an assistant coach, Robinson returned to West Texas A&M for the 1997-98 campaign. He then returned to his alma mater at UT Arlington as an assistant coach with the Mavericks women's program in August of 1998, where he spent two years. He helped the UTA women gain a berth in the 1998-99 Women's NIT.

Prior to beginning his career on the sidelines, Robinson was an All-Mid-South College Conference and All-America selection at Arlington Baptist College. He graduated from UT Arlington in 1993 with a bachelor's in history and later earned his master's degree in education from West Texas A&M in 1998.
