CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi basketball programs, along with the cheer and dance squads and pep band, kicked off the 2013-14 season in front of more than 600 fans Thursday night at Islanders Invasion presented by Domino's in the Dugan Wellness Center.
The evening opened with a performance from the Islanders cheer and dance teams. Then, the women's and men's basketball teams were announced and head women's basketball coach Royce Chadwick and head men's coach Willis Wilson addressed the crowd.
The Invasion continued with the women's basketball team debuting its music video, while the men's team entertained the crowd with dance moves of their own and even pulled spectators out of the crowd to dance with them.
The main event started with the three-point contest. Three players from the men's team and three from the women's team paired up with six total individuals from the crowd. In the end, it was Jasmine Shaw and her partner going up against James King and the fan he competed with. In the end, King and his partner were crowned champs.
Next up was a slam dunk contest, which featured Joy Williamson, Jelani Currie, Rashawn Thomas and back-to-back champion John Jordan competing in the event. The event featured jumping over a fan, between the leg slams and 360 jams. Jordan and Thomas advanced to the finals with Jordan defending his title.
Throughout the night fans received giveaways, got a special delivery from Domino's and participated in contests.
