Islanders Rally Past Lady Demons, 51-49
NATCHITOCHES, La. – Brandi Huff's jumper off the glass with 50.5 seconds left proved the crucial basket, as the Texas A&M – Corpus Christi women's basketball team knocked off Northwestern State 51-49 at Prather Coliseum on Thursday night. Huff led the Islanders with 12 points in the victory.
Jessica Jammer tallied a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, while Alisa Roberts finished in double figures with 10 as well. Ashanti Plummer had a big night on the offensive glass, snaring seven offensive boards and eight total in the victory. The Islanders held NSU to 34.0 percent shooting and forced 18 turnovers.
Janelle Perez was the main catalyst of the Lady Demons offense, finishing with 18 points on 7-for-12 shooting. Keisha Lee added 11 points and Jasmine Upchurch has nine along with 11 rebounds in a losing effort.
Early on, neither team was able to find much on the offensive end, with the Lady Demons opening a 9-2 lead on a Perez three at the 11:52 mark. The two teams then quickly traded baskets to make it 11-4 at the 9:52 mark. The Islanders defense forced NSU into five turnovers in the opening 10 minutes of action.
At that point, the Islanders began to heat up on the offensive end, getting four quick points – two from Jammer on a jumper and two more at the line from Anderson-Sparks – to make it 11-8. From there on, the two teams traded points the rest of the way into the half, with an Alisa Roberts three bringing the score to its closest margin at 15-13. After a Perez jumper made it 19-15 at the 3:21 mark, the only point the rest of the way came on Plummer free throw with 1:38 remaining, as the Lady Demons went to the locker room up 19-16.
Out of the break, the Islanders scored the first four points to gain the lead for the first time. Janae Blount hit a long jumper and Huff followed with two off the glass to make it 20-19 in favor of the visitors. After the teams traded baskets to make it 22-21, the Lady Demons went on a 9-0 run to establish their largest lead of the game at 30-22. A Perez three capped off the rally.
But the Islanders countered with a 7-1 run of their own to trim it to just two. Huff and Jammer did all the damage, with Huff burying a pair of baskets and Jammer converting a layup and a free throw. Again, though, it was Perez coming up big, as a three from the corner pushed the lead back to five. At that point, she had half of her team's 34 points.
After a Lee layup pushed the lead back to seven, the teams battled back-and-forth with the Lady Demons sitting ahead 40-33. The Islanders then embarked on an 11-4 run that culminated in a pair of free throws by Roberts to make it 44-all. A Roberts three was also crucial in the rally for the Islanders.
Perez went 1-for-2 at the line, Huff came up big with a jumper from just inside the three-point line to put the Islanders up 1. After Upchurch hit a pair of free throws to put NSU back up one, Huff came through again, kissing one off the glass for a 48-47 lead. From there, the Islanders locked in defensively, forcing a shot-clock violation, and closed out the game at the line on a pair of clutch shots by Anderson-Sparks and one by Verne'qua Taylor. Upchurch added a layup at the buzzer, but it proved no matter in the 51-49 victory.
The Islanders will close out the 2012-13 season on Saturday night in Nacogdoches, Texas, when they take on Stephen F. Austin. Tipoff between A&M – Corpus Christi and the Ladyjacks is set for 4 p.m. at Johnson Coliseum.
