Jammer’s Season High Not Enough at Lady Lions Rally Past Islanders, 66-54
HAMMOND, La. – Senior Jessica Jammer led all scorers with a season-high 22 points, but it wasn't enough as Southeastern Louisiana had five players in double-figures to capture a 66-54 victory Saturday afternoon for Play4Kay at the University Center.
Jammer paced the Islanders (1-18, 0-8 SLC) with her sixth double-figure scoring game of the season on 10-of-19 shooting from the field and grabbed seven rebounds while Brandi Huff chipped in eight points. Ashanti Plummer registered a career-high seven rebounds while adding seven points in a game that featured three ties and five lead changes.
The Lady Lions (8-11, 1-7 SLC) tallied 26 of their 66 points from the free-throw line and had five players in double-figure scoring. Symone Miller led Southeastern La. with 14 points while Brandi Simmons (12), Aja Gibson (11), Elizabeth Styles (11) and Jameika Hoskins (10) led the Lady Lions in scoring.
The Islanders jumped out a 7-0 lead with baskets by Jammer and Verne'qua Taylor. The Lady Lions got on board with 15 minutes to play in the first half with a layup before Huff hit a layup to push the Islanders ahead by seven. The Islanders built a 15-8 lead after layups by Plummer, Taylor and a putback by Jammer, but after trading baskets, the Lady Lions put together a 10-0 run to take a 20-17 lead with just under six to play in the first half.
Jammer followed with another layup but back-to-back baskets by the Lady Lions padded their lead to five. The Islanders gained momentum heading into the half by building a mini 5-2 run to cut the deficit to two.
The Lady Lions took a 26-24 lead into the locker room. The Islanders shot 39.3 percent to Southeastern La.'s 36.4 percent. Jammer paced all scorers with 13 points and added six rebounds. Plummer led the glass with six rebounds to help the Islanders outrebound the Lady Lions' 20-14. Gibson led Southeastern La. with eight points.
The Islanders jumpstarted the second half on a 3-0 run to take a 27-26 lead. The Lady Lions followed with the first three of the game to take over the lead but Jammer quickly knotted the score at 29 with a layup. After a free throw by Hoskins, Plummer gave the Islanders a 31-30 lead with 15:47 to play on a layup. However, the Lady Lions put together an 11-4 run with 12:50 to take the lead for good.
Texas A&M - Corpus Christi battled back putting together a late rally to cut the lead to three with six minutes to play on a 9-0 run, but an 11-2 run by the Lady Lions capped the scoring.
Jammer, Huff, Taylor, Imani Dunn and Taryn Gregory all received the starting nod for the Islanders, the first time that starting five has seen the floor together and it marked the 10th different starting lineup this season.
The Islanders will return home to host Sam Houston State at the Dugan Wellness Center on Friday, Feb. 1. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m.
