Women’s Basketball Suffers 68-39 loss to McNeese State

LAKE CHARLES, La. – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi women's basketball team led the boards but it wasn't enough as the Islanders suffered a 68-39 loss to McNeese State Thursday night at Burton Coliseum. The Cowgirls were powered by three players in double-figure scoring.

Jessica Jammer paced the Islanders (1-13, 0-3 SLC) with nine points while Ashley Darley added seven points. Texas A&M - Corpus Christi was led by Darley and Jammer on the boards with seven rebounds apiece and Brandi Huff tallied six. Darley also chipped in three steals. The Islanders out rebounded the Cowgirls 43-38 and tallied 11 second-chance points to the Cowgirls' four.

Ashlyn Baggett propelled the Cowgirls (7-8, 2-2 SLC) with 24 points including four from behind the arc while Cecilia Okoye added 11 and Caitln Baggett recorded 10. Arianna James led the glass with a game-high 11 rebounds.

The Cowgirls jumped out to a 7-0 lead before Huff got on board with a layup. After a mini 5-0 run, the Islanders trimmed the lead to six with back-to-back baskets by Darley. Caitlyn Baggett followed with the Cowgirls' first trey of the game. Jammer and Ashanti Plummer each tallied points at the charity stripe before McNeese State put together an 11-0 run with eight minutes to play. Marquesha Anderson-Sparks answered with consecutive baskets and Jammer followed with a put back to pull the Islanders within 12 with under-five to play in the half. McNeese State however built a 21-point cushion on a 9-0 run. The Islanders ended the half on a 4-0 run with free throws by Huff and a layup by Jammer.

The Cowgirls headed into the locker room with a 35-18 lead on 40.6 percent shooting from the field. Jammer led the Islanders with five points while Huff, Darley and Jammer each led the boards with five apiece. The Islanders grabbed the 25-20 advantage on the boards. Ashlyn Baggett led the Cowgirls with 12 points.

McNeese State went on a 14-2 run with 8:40 to play and never looked back as the Islanders fell short 33-21 in the second half.

The Islanders will continue Southland Conference play on the road Saturday, Jan. 12, when they travel to Beaumont, Texas to take on Lamar. Tipoff is slated for 4:00 p.m.
