Late Rally Not Enough, Islanders Fall to Hoosiers, 58-47

CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi women's basketball team put together a late surge but it wasn't enough as Indiana sealed a 58-47 victory Monday night at the American Bank Center. Senior Alisa Roberts tallied a season-high 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting and junior Jessica Jammer tied her career-high with 11 rebounds.

The Islanders (0-4) outscored the Hoosiers (3-1) 28-25 in the second half but Indiana capitalized on 19 second-chance points and five three's in the first half to push ahead. The Hoosiers were paced by Aulani Sinclair's 23 points, including 5-of-8 from behind the arc.

The Islanders jumped out to an early 4-0 lead before Indiana got on board with back-to-back treys to take a 6-4 lead with 16 minutes to play. Texas A&M - Corpus Christi took the lead back over with a free throw from Janae Blount and a jumper by Morgan Schwartz. The two traded baskets before Indiana took the lead back over at the 11:48 mark with two free throws. Roberts answered with the Islanders' first trey of the game but the Hoosiers' Sinclair triggered her third three of the half to give Indiana the lead for good with 10:46 to play. After trading buckets, Sinclair hit another trey to push the Hoosiers' ahead by four.

Ashley Darley hit a jumper to trim the lead to two before Indiana went on an 11-0 run to extend the lead to 13 with 2:34 to play. After a six-minute dry spell without a basket, Sarah Alva scored her first points of the season with a jumper, but the Hoosiers pushed the lead to 13 with 1:42 to play. Roberts tallied a free throw before Sinclair hit a jumper with 26 seconds to play.  

Indiana took a 33-19 lead into the locker room on a 15-3 run. Roberts paced the Islanders with eight points and Jammer led the boards with four. The Islanders shot 35 percent to the Hoosiers' 40.7 percent and outscored Indiana's bench 12-6. Sinclair led the Hoosiers with 16 points, including 4-of-5 from behind the arc. Indiana scored 13 points off the Islanders' 16 first-half turnovers and tallied 15 second-chance points. The first half featured seven lead changes.

The Hoosiers opened the second half with a jumper before the two teams traded baskets at the charity stripe. Roberts followed with the Islanders' first field goal of the second half before the two teams hit back-to-back buckets. After Indiana pushed ahead by 18 with consecutive layups, Darley got on board with her first points of the second half with a put back at the 12:32 mark. After both teams scored at the free-throw line, Indiana's Sasha Chaplin hit a layup and Roberts answered with a lay in for the Islanders. The teams traded baskets before the Islanders went on a mini 4-0 run with layups by Jammer and Brandi Huff to cut the lead to 14 with 7:16 to play.

Indiana answered with a 5-0 run to push the lead back to 19 with 5:15 to play. After trading free throws, the Islanders put together an 8-0 run jumpstarted by Marquesha Anderson-Sparks' two points at the charity stripe. Blount followed with back-to-back treys to pull the Islanders within 11, but it wasn't enough as time expired.

The Islanders will travel to Boulder, Colo. for the 26th Annual Omni Hotels Classic, hosted by Colorado. The Islanders will take on Colorado on Friday, Nov. 23, at 7:30 p.m. MST and will play the winner/loser of the Auburn and San Diego State game on Saturday, Nov. 24, either at 5 p.m. or 7:30 p.m. MST.
