Women's Basketball Falls to Central Arkansas, 66-45
Central Arkansas (24-5, 14-2) clinched the Southland Conference regular-season title and finished with a perfect 16-0 record at home. Megan Herbert and Micah Rice powered the Sugar Bears in double-figure scoring. Herbert tallied 19 points and 11 rebounds and Rice added 14 points. Central Arkansas outrebounded the Islanders 49-36 and tallied 24 of their 66 points from their bench.
The Islanders got on board first with a three-pointer from Roberts and the Sugar Bears' Desiree' Rogers hit a jumper. Roberts gave the Islanders a 6-2 lead with another three with 18:26 to play in the first half and Taylor hit a jumper to push the lead to six.
The two traded free throws before the Sugar Bears pulled within three with a three-pointer from Courtney Duever. The Islanders put together a mini 6-2 run with Taylor chipping in two jumpers and Imani Dunn hitting a fast break layup from Taylor to give the Islanders a 16-9 lead. Herbert answered with a layup and two free throws to cut the Islanders lead to three with 10:36 to play in the half.
From there the Sugar Bears gained momentum answering with a 14-2 run to take a 23-18 lead with 7:32 left in the half. During the run Jessica Jammer scored her first bucket of the game and put a halt to the scoring with a layup to pull the Islanders within three. Central Arkansas extended the 14-2 run to eventually a 29-6 run to pull away and take a 38-22 halftime lead.
Taylor led the Islanders with eight points and four assists at the half and Roberts chipped in six. Jammer led the glass with five boards and added four points. Rice led all scorers at the half with 11 and Herbert added eight points and eight rebounds.
Central Arkansas opened the second half on a 9-0 run to build their biggest lead of the game 47-22 with 16:54 to play. Myles stopped the run with a layup before the Sugar Bears answered with a layup. Roberts hit her third three-pointer of the game but Destinee Rogers responded with a three of her own to extend the lead to 25 with 14 minutes remaining. Taylor triggered her first three of the game and the Sugar Bears made two at the charity stripe. Brandi Huff registered her first bucket of the game before Herbert hit her first three of the game. Myles answered with a layup before Central Arkansas put up three points to take a 62-34 lead with 9:45 left in the game.
The Islanders put together an 11-2 run to pull within 19 with 3:57 left. During the run, Taryn Gregory, Trish Amboree, Myles and Roberts all added buckets and Gregory triggered her first three of the game. Duever stopped the run and capped the scoring with a layup to give Central Arkansas a 66-45 lead with two minutes remaining.
