CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi women's basketball team (4-11, 0-2) took the early lead, but saw it quickly evaporate as the UTSA Roadrunners (5-10, 1-1) notched their first Southland Conference win of the season, 58-38, on Wednesday night at the American Bank Center.
The Roadrunners were paced by three players in double-figure scoring. Whitney Wright and Judy Jones led all scorers with 12 points apiece while Ashley Spaletta added 11 points. Jones led the boards with 14 and Wright chipped in nine. The Roadrunners edged the Islanders on the boards 47-45 and scored 28 of their 58 points in the paint.
The Islanders jumped out to a 7-1 lead with baskets from Zoe Vega-Vega and Dunn before the Roadrunners answered with a 21-3 run. UTSA's Spaletta hit back-to-back threes to start the run and Jones added a layup and three-pointer to give the Roadrunners their first lead of the game.
UTSA hit three more baskets and Kamra King added a free throw to extend the lead to 22-10 with nine minutes left in the half. Verne'qua Taylor and Dunn added buckets to halt the run to bring the Islanders within eight at the 7:30 mark.
The Islanders and Roadrunners traded baskets back-and-forth before Huff hit her third three-pointer of the season. Ashley Gardner answered with her first three of the game to push the lead to 10 with less than three minutes left in the half. Spaletta hit her third shot from downtown to give the Roadrunners a 33-19 halftime lead.
Dunn led the Islanders at the half with five points and four rebounds and Myles chipped in four points and led the Islanders on the glass with five boards. The Roadrunners notched the 26-24 advantage on the boards and 17 of their 33 points came from the bench. Spaletta led all scorers at the half with nine points on 3-of-5 shooting from the field and from behind the arc. Jones added eight points and five rebounds.
Vega-Vega's jumper started things off for the Islanders out of the locker room, but the Roadrunners answered with three points before the two teams traded baskets. The Islanders cut the lead to seven with less than 12 minutes to play behind a 9-0 run. Alisa Roberts triggered her first three of the game and the second three-pointer of the game for the Islanders, while Huff's back-to-back layups and two free throws by Damequia Montgomery cut UTSA's lead to 39-32.
The two teams traded buckets before the Roadrunners put together a 10-1 run to extend the lead to 50-35 with less than four minutes left to play. Jammer's jumper stopped the run with the Islanders trailing by 14, but it wasn't enough as the Roadrunners finished on a 7-2 run to end the game.
The Islanders will continue conference action at home on Saturday, Jan. 14, when they face Southeastern Louisiana at the American Bank Center. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
